When a demon claims another, that means one owns the other. It's not about love, it's about ownership. However, does it make a difference if the one doing the claiming is in love with the one being claimed? This fic doesn't actually explore that - it's kind of the prequel to that, and Blossomwitch has promised a sequel titled The Concept of Love which will go into that - but it definitely makes you think. I particularly like the fact that Hiei is actually articulate and speaks in multiple sentences in this fic - so many stories have him saying nothing but "hn," but then I went back and re-read the manga and I was all wait Hiei actually does talk like a normal human being, what the hell - and what he says is heartbreaking in its beauty.
